Working some grueling clinch work in last night’s advance class. Some of my favorite fighters are known as Muay Khao (clinch or pressure fighters) in Thailand. Yes there’s an aspect of brute strength but I find beauty in the instinctive nature of clinch fighting. Staying balanced while your opponent is trying to unbalance you, finding & fighting for correct hand positioning so you have the proper leverage to strike with knees or sweep, fighting your own fatigue since working in the clinch can rob you of any endurance you have left. And of course, the feeling of landing a knee on your opponent’s ribs or mid-section might be the best feeling ever!
In the past few years, Thai fighters like Petchboonchu and Yodwicha have dominated the stadium circuits with their Muay Khao style. Recently, Muangthai (also famous for his deadly elbows) has racked up impressive wins with a strong clinch game. And possibly one of the best fighters of all time, Dieselnoi racked up a record of 110 wins in 120 fights while fighting in the Golden Era of Muay Thai. All these fighters have fights available on Youtube. Check them out!
